Fostering Intellectual and Developmental Disability Inclusive Pre-licensure Nursing Education

Description

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience inequities in health care access and health outcomes. The 2022 WHO Global Report for Health Equity for Persons with Disabilities called for nursing curriculum to integrate disability content to address these inequities. Nursing students often receive inadequate if any education about People with IDD, and nursing faculty may struggle to incorporate content about People with IDD because they often lack knowledge about this population, support of other faculty leaders, knowledgeable about nursing care of People with IDD, textbook resources or nursing guidelines specific to care of this population, or curriculum space.

The presenters will share reflections on applying an inclusive research methodological approach through collaborating with research advisors with IDD to design a Delphi study. They will present the key study findings and share a nurse educator’s toolkit, incorporating the study findings, to guide educators on priority content areas to include in curriculum development, supporting resources, and content priorities mapped to CASN entry to practice competencies.
