Promoting Safe and Appropriate Prescribing and Management of Medications in Nursing Education through Implementation of a Deprescribing Curricular Framework

This webinar series will provide nurse educators with information, resources, and practical tools to assist them in the integration of deprescribing competencies relevant to nurses into undergraduate nursing curriculum. Participants will examine concepts related to medication safety, appropriate prescribing, and deprescribing in the context of minimizing medication-related harms and providing safe, quality care for older adults. The focus will be on the nursing implications of deprescribing, and the understanding and application of the Deprescribing Framework developed by the Canadian Medication Appropriateness and Deprescribing Network.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the concepts of medication safety, appropriate prescribing, and polypharmacy as they relate to nursing practice
  • Explain the significance, goals, and principles of deprescribing as a strategy to minimize medication-related harm and optimize patient care
  • Describe and examine non-pharmacological approaches for patient care
  • Identify potentially inappropriate medications using validated tools and criteria
  • Discuss the nursing implications of deprescribing
  • Understand and apply the Curricular Framework for an Interprofessional Approach to Deprescribing
  • Conduct a comprehensive patient medication history, incorporating clinical context and patient goals, and appropriate tools
  • Design a deprescribing-focused course, module, or session, integrating the identified deprescribing competencies using active learning strategies for nursing students

Audience: Nurse educators in undergraduate academic settings who are interested in integrating concepts of medication safety, appropriate prescribing, and deprescribing into their curriculum.

Andrea Rochon (St. Lawrence College)

Dr. Andrea Rochon is a Professor in the School of Baccalaureate Nursing at St. Lawrence College (SLC) in Kingston, Ontario. Dr. Rochon recently developed the curriculum for and is teaching an undergraduate gerontological nursing course at SLC. Dr. Rochon’s previous clinical work was as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Gerontology, which is what sparked her interest in polypharmacy, potentially inappropriate medications, and deprescribing. Her PhD research focused on opioid deprescribing in residents of long-term care homes in Ontario. Her publications about opioids and deprescribing include:

Winnie Sun (Ontario Tech University)

Dr. Winnie Sun is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Ontario Tech University, and she is holding a research appointment as the Co-Research Director of the Advancement in Dementia Care Centre (ADCC), collaboration between Ontario Tech University and Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, in Ontario Canada. In 2024, Dr. Sun received the Research Excellence Chair Award from Ontario Tech University where she is leading a program of research to promote healthy aging and dementia care.

Dr. Winnie Sun is the Chair of the Nursing Deprescribing Sub-Committee and a member of the Healthcare Provider Committee of Canadian Medication Appropriateness and Deprescribing Network (CaDeN). Her area of focus was on educating home healthcare nursing about deprescribing for older adults. She delivered community presentations to the public to educate older adults about deprescribing and medication management. She also provided presentations to raise awareness about deprescribing education for nurses at various national and international conferences. Her publications about deprescribing includes:
