Description

In this continuing education course, nurse educators will strengthen their knowledge base on curriculum content for communicable disease prevention and control and emergency preparedness for undergraduate nursing education. There will be opportunity to develop teaching and learning strategies using evidence-based activities related to communicable disease prevention and control, and emergency preparedness.

Delivery: Online (Zoom & Moodle)
Timeframe: Three live 2-hour sessions during the week of June 22 – 28, 2020.

Monday, June 22, 2020 – 1500 – 1700 EDT
Wednesday, June 24, 2020 – 1500 – 1700 EDT
Friday, June 26, 2020 – 1500 – 1700 EDT

Requirements

Attendance of live virtual classes, participation in the course discussion forum, and completion of a learning activity.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will:

  1. Appraise an institution’s curriculum related to communicable disease prevention and control, and emergency preparedness.
  2. Describe the epidemiology and classifications of communicable diseases
  3. Describe key functions and roles of public health organizations and public health nurses in pandemic and emergency response.
  4. Distinguish the public health nursing roles for the prevention and control of communicable diseases with individuals, families, groups, communities/populations and systems.
  5. Explain the roles and relevant legislation of international, national, provincial/territorial, and local authorities in the control and management of communicable diseases, and emergency preparedness.
  6. Explain communicable disease prevention and control, and emergency preparedness resource availability.
  7. Apply regulatory entry to practice competences and CASN’s entry to practice public health nursing competencies to curricula.
  8. Construct an evidence informed teaching and learning strategy.

Policies Cancellations

  • Registrations that are cancelled up to one week before the start of the course will be refunded minus a $50 administrative fee.
  • Registrations that are cancelled with less than one week’s notice will not be refunded, though the participant will have the option to defer the cost of the course to apply to another CNEI/CASN course.
  • There will be no refunds issued once the course begins.
  • CASN reserves the right to cancel this course if it does not meet minimal group requirements.
  • Course Content
  • Participants are responsible for access to any course materials, including articles and textbooks.
  • There will be no make-up assignments accepted.
  • Assignments will not be re-marked.
  • Late submissions will not be accepted, unless under exceptional circumstances.
