Building Climate Change Competencies among Baccalaureate Nursing Students

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this continuing education course, nurse educators will enhance their knowledge of climate change and common vector-borne diseases associated with climate change in Canada to build climate change competencies among baccalaureate nursing students. There will be an opportunity to develop teaching and learning strategies related to climate change, which can be used for curriculum development.

REQUIREMENTS

Participate in the on-line webinars each session and successfully complete assignment activities. A Certificate of Successful Completion will be granted to participants who successfully fulfill the course requirements for the CNEI Building Climate Change Competencies among Baccalaureate Nursing Students Certificate Course.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, participants will have developed the following competencies:

  1. Describe climate change science, emerging driving factors of climate change, and sustainable efforts to reduce the impact of climate change nationally and globally.
  2. Explain the relationship between climate change and vector-borne diseases, such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus in Canada.
  3. Identify the epidemiology and changing landscape of vector-borne diseases in Canada, as well as primary and secondary preventive strategies to address these diseases.
  4. Reflect on advocacy strategies to address climate change and vector-borne diseases as practicing health care professionals.
  5. Understand opportunities for cross-curricular integration of climate change and vector-borne disease content.
  6. Develop appropriate teaching and learning strategies to enhance climate change competencies among baccalaureate nursing students.

About the course INSTRUCTORS

Morgan Magnuson and Shannon Vandenberg are nurse educators in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge, located in Lethbridge, Alberta. Their backgrounds in public health nursing have enabled them to bring public health issues, such as climate change, infectious disease spread, and communicable disease control into the courses they teach, helping students gain a practical understanding of relevant health issues in Canada and around the globe. Morgan and Shannon teach a variety of undergraduate nursing courses, including community health nursing theory and practice, leadership in nursing, global health issues, and final preceptorship. They worked closely with CASN over the past year and a half working as content experts on the Nursing and Climate Driven Vector-Borne Disease e-resource, which was recently launched on the CASN website. Morgan and Shannon also plan to embark on their PhD journey this fall

Cancellations

  • Registrations that are cancelled up to one week before the start of the course will be refunded minus a $50 administrative fee.
  • Registrations that are cancelled with less than one week’s notice will not be refunded, though the participant will have the option to defer the cost of the course to apply to another CNEI/CASN course.
  • There will be no refunds issued once the course begins.
  • CASN reserves the right to cancel this course if it does not meet minimal group requirements.

Participants are responsible for access to any course materials, including articles and textbooks.
